I’ve always had a slightly international upbringing, having gone to school in Spain and Belgium, which meant picking up a few languages along the way — Spanish, Dutch, Flemish and French — mostly by accident rather than design. Because of that, singing in other languages has never felt like a party trick; it’s just something that comes naturally, and I’ve always thought songs sound better when you actually know what the words mean.

It also tends to catch people out slightly when they hear a Brit singing comfortably in more than one language. It probably helps that my accent isn’t too bad either, but mainly it comes from years of living with the languages rather than trying to mimic them — and being able to chat to members of the audience in their own language between songs is always a nice touch.
